NIST Reviews RFID Safety
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published a new report: Guidelines for Security Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Systems.
The report decribes RFID technology and reviews potential risks associated with both security and privacy. Also detailed are strategies to offset potential risks associated with RFID utilization in the healthcare arena.
Those include:
- Separating RFID databases from other systems,
- Requiring user authentication with RFID systems,
- Ongoing auditing activities to ensure optimal security, and
- Means to appropriately destroy confidential data contained on RFID equipment, such as tags.
