Enovate IT Unveils New Smart Medication Cart

A new mobile medication cart was unveiled by EnovateIT in mid-February, described on the company’s web site in a news release. The cart is intended to support efforts to improve medication safety through improvements to delivery of medications.

The new SmartCart system is controlled by clinicians and includes 24 different drawers, one for each patient. The lockable drawers open individually to ensure that patients receive only their own medication. The system also incorporates e-MAR, med-passes, bedside documentation, and inventory management. These optional tools help track information at the point-of-care in real time, this data can also be evaluated later.

Multiple computing platforms are supported, including tablets, notebooks, Thin-Clients, and All-in-Ones. Software used with the system is Windows-based and HL7-ready to foster simplified integration with other system used in facilities. The SmartCart also supports VESA-based alternative monitors and replaceable monitors. A keyboard light was integrated into the system to support use in darker environments.

The cart weighs in at 120 pounds when all 23 drawers are full and measure 18″ by 22″ at the wheel base to support maneuvering through congested patient care areas. The 16″ by 16″ work surface area includes raised edges to minimize spills. System accessories further include a sharps bin container and cup dispenser.

The system relies on dual Lithium-Ion batteries which reduces the need to recharge the system. The system, though, can be recharged with a standard AC outlet. A display of the battery and health of the battery are also incorporated.
