Nanoencryption Technology Added to Approval
A system designed to combat counterfeiting and illegal diversion was created by the Food and Drug Administration. The NanoGuardian, including NanoEncryption technology, received an expanded approval from the federal agency. The system is from NanoGuardian, a subsidiary of NanoInk.
The new approval, packaged as a Supplemental New Drug Application, indicates use of the system as an on-dosage, brand protection technology. The tool provides pharmaceutical companies with multi-layered, forensic authentication, and brand protection at the level of each individual dosage.
The system captures a broad amount of information related to each dose of medication type including vials, capsules, and tablets. Data collected with the system includes dose strength, expiration date, manufacturing information, and the targeted distribution site. This can be used to complement information contained in medication packaging, such as barcodes and RFID labeling.
The system is designed to protect the patency of the pharmaceutical supply chain. The company notes, however, that the system can be used for additional applications besides medication.
