WellPoint to Acquire American Imaging Management

WellPoint Incorporated, a health insurance company, plans to acquire American Imaging Management. The deal entails a $300 million exchange.

American Imaging Management specializes in moderating the costs associated with medical imaging. WellPoint is making the purchase to better control costs associated with imaging; minimizing administrative costs and cutting down on duplications of the same imaging studies. American Imaging created a software program that helps healthcare providers identify imaging centers which are most cost-effective.

WellPoint plans to use the technology to help control costs in other areas, such as cardiac care and medication. The software, as well as WellPoint’s cost control strategies, may provide insight into means to scale back costs.
