GS1 Data Standards Endorsed

The Strategic Marketplace Initiative (SMI) announced its endorsement for the new GS1 data standards. Moreover, the organization is calling for nationwide adoption of such among healthcare suppliers and providers across the United States.

SMI noted the importance of establishing these standards as a means to support the healthcare supply chain in the US. This new system will unify the language used across the diverse business sectors that serve healthcare and further includes a common implementation effort.

SMI has been working, over the past three years, to support such a universal system. Previous efforts include providing organization members with information and creation of workgroups for early adopters. Those workgroups are still ongoing.

The Healthcare Supply Chain Standards Coalition recently announced plans to align programming with a system that supports universal tracking. They further announced plans to launch a data synchronization effort for medical devices and drugs.
