New Absorbable Sutures Approved
Tepha of Massachusetts received FDA approval for a new type of absorbable sutures deemed both stronger and more flexible than currently available products.
The polyester sutures are derived from recombinant E. Coli that is genetically engineered. This is the first example of a plastic material manufactured from genetically modified bacteria available with FDA approval.
One of the unique properties of the sutures is their durability, which makes them ideal for procedures that require stitches to last longer. In abdominal surgery, for example, sutures that dissolve too quickly can put patients at risk for serious infections. The new sutures also dissolve into biocompatible compounds which do not cause inflammation.
Tepha is examining other applications for the new plastic, including heart valves for children.
