Emory Adopts RFID

The largest healthcare system in Georgia, Emory Healthcare, adopted an RFID tracking solution for infusion pumps. The system implemented is from General Electric, the Intellimotion RFID asset-tracking system.

The system includes 2.45 GHz active RFID tags, the Where NET location system platform, location sensors and exciters. The tools are all components of GE’s web-based asset tracking software, IntelliMotion.

Emory already implemented the solution at three of its hospitals to monitor the location of infusion pumps. The RFID system replaced a manual counting approach to manage these devices.

System inefficiencies, particularly the number of pumps in use and those waiting to be cleaned, prompted adoption of the solution. Lack of accurate accounting previously caused the hospitals to rent infusion pumps.

The new system tracks the location and status of pumps, ensuring a more adequate inventory account; in storage areas, waiting to be cleaned, and also on the hospital wards.

The system was only recently implemented, so hospital officials have not yet had adequate time to assess outcomes.
