HealthPia Launches GlucoPhone

HealthPia introduced their new phone that sends glucose monitoring data. The tool also analyzes blood glucose levels. The tool was introduced at the American Association of Diabetes Educators conference last week. The tool received approval from the FDA.

The first iteration of this product is an LG5200 phone that works on the Verizon Wireless network using a CDMA platform. The tool works as any other glucometer. Patients insert a test strip into a slot on the phone and obtain a blood sample. The monitoring software is integrated into the phone to test and review specimens.

Results from glucose analysis are stored in the cell phone and can be sent to healthcare providers and others as requested by the patient. A demonstration of the product is available on the organization’s website.

According to the report describing the launch on Medgadget, the phone is a somewhat antiquated model from the 2003 product year. According to HealthPia, there are three models of the phone currently available: the VX-5200, UX-5000, and the LX-350.

HealthPia’s goal is to support ease of monitoring for diabetic patients without disrupting their lifestyle. The company hopes to expand the line of products available to include other phones as well as services from additional wireless carriers.
