New Ventilator from Drager Cleared for Market
Drager Medical recently launched a new ventilator, the Carina, designed for sub-acute settings. The system received marketing clearance from the Food and Drug Administration, noted in an article by Medgadget.
The system can deliver either invasive or noninvasive therapy (pdf). It incorporates Synch Plus, a new technology available from Drager. This supports compensation for patients during leakage and provides breath delivery in an effective manner. This system further supports delivery of ventilation to each patient based on their unique requirements.
The Carina has a sophisticated trigger function that minimizes the amount of work associated with breathing. Patient comfort during changing ventilation requirements is optimized with an automatic ramp adjustment which modifies inflation patterns to support patient needs.
The Carina incorporates an internal battery, with a one hour life. In addition, an external battery has an eight hour life. As such, it does not require a high-pressure gas system, a common component necessary for many ventilators currently available. Additional features of the system include automatic termination criteria and leakage compensation.
The system was specifically designed for use in settings such as the general ward, emergency room, intensive care unit, or sub-acute facilities. An additional advantage of the tool is a quiet blower, which creates a quieter environment for both staff members and patients.
