Integrated Humidifier CPAP Introduced
A new continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system that includes a fully integrated heated humidifier was launched by Covidien, Limited, the Sandman Intro CPAP. A press release describing the new product was posted on the Covidien website.
The Sandman Intro CPAP weight is 2.65 pounds and is both compact and robust enough for patients to use the device while they travel. Features that support device portability include power from an external battery or an AC/DC battery. An altitude compensation feature, which adjusts to pressure changes associated with up to 9,000 feet elevation, is incorporated. The system additionally compensates for changes to barometric pressure.
This device is the only one which integrates heated humidification in a compact design. This improves patient comfort while minimizing dryness to the upper airway. The system’s “HumidControl” feature ensures a consistent temperature difference between the ambient air and water in the chamber. This feature minimizes the amount of condensation in the Sandman tubing. It also ensures a stable level of humidification throughout treatment during nighttime.
The Sandman is designed to be used by a wide range of patients and delivers both continuous positive airway pressure as well as heated humidification. The design is intended to encourage patient use and is both unobtrusive and simplified. The overall intent of the product is to improve comfort during nighttime breathing for patients who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
