Pencil Beam Scanning Launched by IBA
Ion Beam Applications (IBA) announced the launch (pdf) of a new cyclotron-based integrated proton therapy system that incorporates Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS). Marketing approval with the Food and Drug Administration is pending.
The availability of the PBS technology, according to representatives from the company, will improve dose conformity to the intended treatment volume. This system is considered critical to the development of advanced tools using proton beams.
This new system, once FDA approval is received, will be one of four systems that incorporate the IBA Universal Nozzle. This system delivers the proton beam in four different modes. Those include uniform scattering, double scattering, and single scattering. The Nozzle simplifies the delivery process by automating delivery and negating the requirement for any manual intervention.
The system will be available for commercial marketing following FDA approval. IBA plans to simultaneously seek approvals for release in other countries.
The IBA is considered a leader in the field of proton therapy systems. These systems are used for cancer diagnosis and therapy.
