New Protocol for Anaphylaxis Launched
A new protocol for emergency management of severe allergic reactions was published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, as described in the Respiratory Report.
The guidelines, entitled Be SAFE, include Seek support, Allergen identification and avoidance, Follow up for specialty care, and Epinephrine for Emergencies. The team reviewed the existing medical literature, noting inconsistencies in treatment protocols. Also mentioned were limitations in approaches to treat severe allergic reaction.
The article details management protocols for anaphylaxis, including signs and symptoms to monitor the development of such. Authors of the article included an expert panel of emergency physicians and allergists. The effort was further supported by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI).
Information about the Be SAFE program is available on the website of the ACAAI.
