Intubation Tool Eliminates Disinfection

The GlideScope Cobalt was launched by Verathon Inc. The tool leverages the company’s existing video laryngoscope system which provides excellent airway visualization. The tool developed as the company recognized the need to provide a tool that supports quick intubation of patients.

The new system is a single use device. This eliminates the need to disinfect the blade tool required for intubation, unlike Verathon’s previous version which was reusable.

Airway protection is especially critical in the emergency room as well as the operating room. It is in these two arenas that patients most often require emergency intubation. A system that is immediately available will save precious time.

The additional component of video laryngoscopy is helpful for patients with an airway that is difficult to access without additional visualization benefits. However, the difference in costs between a single use versus a renewable system must be evaluated critically.
