Masimo PVI Tool Validated

A study published in last month’s issue of the British Journal of Anaesthesia indicates that that the new PVI measurement proposed by Masimo can predict the fluid responsiveness of patients undergoing surgery. The researchers note that this system has clinical applications for anaesthesiologists.

Anaesthesiologists are frequently challenged by the decision of whether to increase fluids delivered to patients to support delivery of oxygen throughout the body. Studies indicate that the current data which clinicians rely on to support this decision has an accuracy of 50 to 60 percent. Moreover, consequences of excess fluid administration include increased morbidity and mortality.

PVI is a new system proposed by Masimo that provides automated, continuous, and noninvasive monitoring of variations in pulse oximeter waveform amplitude during respiration. It is integrated into the Masimo Rainbow SET technology platform. Data indicates that invasive measures of change during respiration are more accurate markers of patient response to fluids.

Results from the study, described in a press release from Masimo, indicate that PVI had a high rate of accuracy in determining which patients will respond to the delivery of fluids and nonresponders. Access to such data allows anaethesiologists to better manage these patients as they are undergoing surgery.

Secondary benefits indicate that patients undergoing high risk procedures who have aterial catheters that monitor pulse pressure variation have less frequent post-operative morbidity. Additional benefits include a shortened timeframe during which patients require mechanical ventilation and decreased length of hospital stay. The study completed for Masimo indicates that the Masimo PVI system produces results similar to that obtained with pulse pressure variation to predict the responsiveness to fluids.
