New LVADs Discussed at Cardiology Meeting
Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) support ventricular function in patients with compromised heart functioning, particularly those awaiting transplant. A new device design is described in Medical News Today.
One new LVAD was presented at the recent meeting of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). The Heartmate II uses continuous flow blood pump technology through mechanical support of circulation.
The study showed device safety and efficacy and is the first completed study for this new type of LVAD in the U.S. As well, 75 percent of patients survived to transplant or 180 days after device implantation. Additional benefits noted were improvements in functional status and life quality.
