New Stent for Refractory Angina
Israeli researchers are developing a new stent specifically for patients with refractory angina.
Scientists from Neovasc Medical, Inc. have created a stent crafted of stainless steel with an hourglass shape that is balloon-expandable with a catheter unique to the product. The product design limits the amount of blood flow leaving the heart.
The new product is the subject of a report in the current issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Researchers describe the experience using the Neovasc stent in a small sample of 15 patients. 12 of the patients has a marked improvement in the pain associated with angina, which can significantly reduce overall life quality.
Further studies are required to evaluate the device’s safety and efficacy. In the meantime, cardiologists are interested in the new product that may offer a treatment option for patients with refractory angina, who have limited available therapies.
