Peripheral Embolization System Introduced by Terumo

Terumo Interventional Services launched a new embolization system (pdf) for the treatment of vascular malformations, aneurysms, and occluded blood vessels. The AZUR Peripheral HydroCoil Embolization System includes a hydrogel coating. The company’s press release includes further information describing device components and design.

The AZUR system is the only peripheral platinum coil embolization system that includes this sort of gel coating. The device also expands when the coil is introduced to the bloodstream. This provides increased mechanical occlusion and filling with a fewer number of coils than other available products. Terumo notes that the product can achieve four more times the filling volume for the 0.035 inch coil and five times more filling volume for the 0.018 inch coil compared to coils the same size manufactured from platinum.

The incorporated hydrogel coating has limited expansion during the first three minutes of placement and then completely expands by twenty minutes. This creates a more mechanically stable system.

An additionally unique feature of the AZUR device is that this is the solely available system that is entirely detachable. This allows clinicians to detach device coils simply by pressing a button in the span of a second. The coil can be repositioned or withdrawn until secure, ideal placement is achieved. This lowers the risks of coil migration and non-target embolization. Moreover, this provides clinicians with increased control in areas with challenging anatomy and provides an ideal tool for use in areas with high blood flow volume.
