St. Jude Lead Approved

St. Jude Medical, Inc. received the blessing of the FDA for the new OptiSense lead. This pacing lead is specifically designed for increased sensitivity to activity in the right atrium and is especially targeted to patients with atrial tachyarrhythmia.

The device is designed to reduce the detection of unwanted signals. This increases options for the location to place leads, particularly lower in the atrium without problems associated with interference from lower chamber signals.

The optimized signal detection is a function of a modified tip design. Product design minimizes the space between the ring and device tip to 1.1 mm spacing.

The tip design increases the ability to both detect signals as well as classify them. Accurate classification is supported by decreased detection of signals generated from the ventricles.

The clinical studies conducted to date indicate that the pacing offered with the OptiSense lead most closely resembles normal heart activity. St. Jude will showcase the product at the 2007 Europace Meeting.
