Tool to Remove Leads Launched By Spectranetics

Spectranetics launched new device designed to remove infected or non-functional cardiac defibrillation and pacing leads, the LLD EZ Lead Locking Device (LLD).

Leads can be challenging to remove because scar tissue can become attached to leads in multiple places along the length of the device. The LLD EZ supports physicians as they secure the lead by creating traction used to support removal of devices completely and safely.

This Spectranetics device supports removal of the leads from the surrounding scar tissue. The device incorporates a braided mesh which expands, this secures the leads from the device along the hollow inner lumen. This allows the application of traction needed to remove leads.

A locking device is further incorporated which can be both unlocked and reversed. This component enables clinicians to either remove or reposition the device with respect to the lead. The system was designed to support removal of different lead sizes.

Additional design components of the LLD EZ include a sleek profile and enhanced tip design. The system tip is radiopaque, which enables use of fluoroscopy to verify placement of the device. Extraction sheath loading is supported with a new low-profile handle design. These features allow for tracking and passage through tight curves and prevent the opportunity for lumen damage.

Maintenance of defibrillators and pacemakers is increasingly of interest because of the growing population of patients who have these devices implanted and more often at a younger age. The leads that are implanted can become either non-functional or infected and may need to be removed over time.
