Vena Cava Filter Approved
The Celect Vena Cava Filter designed by Cook Medical received a permanent indication from the Food and Drug Administration. The tool is designed to lower the risk of pulmonary embolism and blood clots stemming from a variety of conditions.
The filter is shaped like a cone; design is intended to support device placement in the center of the vessel. Position is then maintained with struts. The potential of device in-growth outside of intended targets is minimized with the Celect design.
The device already received marketing clearance for permanent placement. The design was developed recognizing the successes of previous vena cava filters developed by the corporation, including the Bird’s Nest and Gunther Tulip. In Europe and elsewhere, the device was also approved for retrieval. The company has ongoing studies underway to examine additional device indications.
