Gel from Platelets Promotes Healing

A report from the current issue of the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery describes improved healing of skin wounds by application of a gel formulated from a patient’s platelets.

The gel was created by taking patient’s platelets, processing that into a concentrated plasma and then into the gel formulation.

In a small study of eight patients, the research team compared closure of a small puncture wound treated with antibiotic ointment compared to the autologous platelet gel. The gel treatment improved wound healing at a rate of 10 percent.

Larger studies are required to further assess the approach.
