Lucid VivaNet Reduces Reliance on Skin Biopsies

The VivaNet system from Lucid Technologies allows clinicians the opportunity to examine suspicious areas of the skin using a confocal microscope. These images can then be transmitted via the internet. The integrated tools provide the first opportunity to collaborate in this manner, providing an opportunity to make diagnoses more quickly.

The VivaScope confocal microscope provides the highest quality, macroscopic dermatologic images in full color. This imaging is combined with technology developed by Lucid which allows for in vivo, digitization of images which provide additional images with microscopic cellular resolution of the epidermis.

The system combines technology components which allow transfer, storage, and retrieval of the images that were obtained with the VivaScope. General procedures with the VivaNet system entail image capture and upload to the secure VivaNet server using an internet connection. Other related information about the patient and relevant clinical history can also be included. At that point, authorized users can gain access to data required for review.

These varied tools may allow review of dermatologic changes without necessitating skin biopsy. Pathologists can review images for potential similarities to a variety of different skin conditions, including actinic keratoses, contact dermatitis, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. It also provides clinicians with quick assess to review of the patient’s skin condition.
