New Chest Compression System Launched in U.S.

Through a distribution agreement with JOLIFE AB, Physio-Control, Incorporated will commence marketing the LUCAS Chest Compression System in the U.S., as described by Medical News Today. The chest compression system is designed to support optimal delivery of resuscitation techniques in the field, in accordance woith the American Heart Association 2005 recommendations.

The LUCAS Chest Compression System is an external device that ensures correct delivery of chest compressions during cardiac resuscitation for patients who have acute circulatory arrest. The system is run with high-pressure air which is supplied from either an air wall outlet in a hospital or a compressed air tank. LUCAS can be used both in the hospital or the field, including ambulances.

Key components of the device ensure that patients are given CPR, including consistent and uninterrupted compressions. As well, delivery of chest compressions mechanically allows simultaneous delivery of defibrillation, ventilation, and medication.

One benefit of the system is that it prevents interruption or incorrect delivery of chest compressions that may arise due to transport conditions, fatigue of the rescuer, or a novice rescuer. The device also supports safety of the patient and rescuer during transport; patient arms are secured and rescuers can sit, with a seatbelt, during CPR delivery.

The product is already widely available throughout Europe, since execution of a distribution agreement with Physio-Control in November 2004. The system was recently displayed in the U.S. at the Seattle session of the American College of Emergency Physicians Scientific Assembly.
