SonoSite Launches Handheld Ultrasound Device
The S-FAST point-of-care ultrasound tool was launched by SonoSite, Incorporated at the American College of Emergency Physicians Scientific Assembly. The introduction was also detailed in a press release by the company. The product will be available for shipping by the end of the year.
The new ultrasound device, with its small profile, is specifically intended for the needs of emergency room physicians. FAST (Focused Assessment with Ultrasound for Trauma) exams are completed quickly and easily. This enables assessment of the internal organs for internal bleeding, detection of ectopic pregnancy, and guidance of line placement. A variety of transducers are available to support different applications and exam types.
Key features utilized in the system include processing power, image quality, and advanced data management. These were developed by SonoSite for the M-Turbo system and then modified for use in the fast paced emergency room setting. Processing power is 16 times more powerful than SonoSite’s existing ultrasound system.
The system can be started within 15 seconds and weighs in at 8.35 pounds. The handheld includes an on-board docking station, The LCD display on the device is a 10.4″, which supports images contrast and resolution. Batteries are required for operation and the device is easy to clean and sanitize.
Optimal image views are obtained using two simple controls. The tool includes VESA compliant mounting capabilities. The device can be held in hand, fixed to a wall or ceiling, or mounted on an IV pole. It also is durable; the device can tolerate falls less than three feet onto a hard surface. Design considerations recognized the challenges of the emergency room setting.
SonoSite acknowledges the contributions of emergency room physicians in developing the new device. Handheld ultrasound devices have already improved the flow and speed of care delivery in the emergency room.
