New Tech Illuminates Veins

According to Red Herring startup Luminetx said it was now shipping its VeinViewer imaging device which clearly shows veins through the skin using infrared light. This product could be useful to increase first-stick success, especially for children who have hard-to-find vessels and older people whose veins are usually fragile. By revealing vein location and orientation, the product helps clinicians select vessels and orient their needle. Its manufacturer also recommends it for phlebectomy and sclerotherapy to help assess the need to treat spider and reticular veins. Other technologies such as transillumination and ultrasounds already exist to help see veins better, though they might provide less clarity.
