Automated System to Test Blood Donations Approved
Testing to screen blood donated for HIV-1 and Hepatitis C can now be completed with the PROCLEIX TIGRIS system from Gen-Probe Incorporated following FDA approval May 24th. The system can also test organ and tissue samples.
The system detects hepatitis B (HBV) in patients who have positive core antibodies and surface antigen. However, it is not approved for mass HBV testing at this time.
The PROCLEIX TIGRIS system is to be used with the assay systems also developed by Gen-Probe. The fully automated system processes samples at a rate of 1,000 specimens within a 14 hour period.
This level of capability is appropriate for testing a smaller group of samples at one single time. This approach maximizes lab staff time and effort and minimizes the likelihood of errors during testing.
