Lung Resection Improved with CyberKnife

Newly published data validates use of the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System with Synchrony to remove lung tissue in patients with malignancy. Accuray noted publication of the data in a press release, which was originally published in the journal Clinical Lung Cancer.

The system, manufactured by Accuray, Incorporated is associated with a decreased rate in the incidence of side effects compared to radiation treatment and invasive approaches, as well as complications within one year of follow-up. This is particularly relevant in light of the fact that conventional treatment regimens, including radiation and invasive surgery, frequently result in significant side effects.

The approach further provided excellent control over continued tumor growth, marked at 85 percent in patients with stage I primary disease. Over ninety percent of patients with recurrent disease and 62 percent of those with metastatic lung cancer responded to treatment with the Accuray.

An additional benefit of using th eAccuray is treatment in a shorter time frame, requiring only three outpatient sessions. This may improve satisfaction for patients with one alternative being daily radiation treatment for four to six weeks. Other quality of life both during and after therapy were noted by the research team from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
