Gamma Detection System Introduced

An enhanced gamma detection control unit, the new Neoprobe GDS, was recently introduced (pdf) by Neoprobe Corporation. The system was launched in collaboration with Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Incorporated, who is Neoprobe’s partner for marketing.

This system utilizes internal circuitry, which allows communication with the company’s line of wireless probes. This design negates the need for external adapters.

The entire family of gamma detectors available from Neoprobe are based on Bluetooth technology. This eliminates the need for cables in the operating room, which is an improvement because those can complicate the surgical field.

Wireless probes used with the company’s gamma detection units are available in a variety of designs including either a straight or angled tip. All can be used with the company’s older gamma detector, the neo2000 control unit.

Gamma detection control units are frequently utilized by surgical oncologists. Those are often incorporated during intraoperative lymphatic mapping or sentinel lymph node biopsy.
