Radiolabeling Technology License Completed by Bayer

Bayer Schering Pharma completed a licensing agreement with FutureChem for the international rights to fluorine-18 (F-18) radiolabelling technology. Terms of the agreement were not publicized. A press release describing the contract execution was posted on the Bayer Healthcare website.

This technology is employed to label target specific tracers used in molecular imaging studies. The tracers are commonly employed in nuclear medicine studies such as PET scans.

Included in the technology rights acquired by Bayer is a nucleophilic substitution reaction in protic solvent, which results in yields that are five to fifty times the size achieved with current labeling technologies. It is suggested that this new approach to label tracers will make the tracers more available and, thus, increase the availability of molecular imaging studies.

The purchase further highlights the intent of Bayer to expand the array of products to support imaging studies.
