Option for Fibroid Treatment Widely Available

A noninvasive procedure is now more accessible for patients with uterine fibroids. ExAblate is an approach to manage the condition that uses magnetic resonance imaging and focused ultrasound to destroy the fibroid tissue.

One advantage of this treatment approach is that it is noninvasive, compared to other options which are surgical, entail significant complications, and have a protracted time until recovery.

The ExAblate system uses combined ultrasound and MR imaging tools throughout the procedure; to identify fibrous tissue, plan treatment, and monitor therapy. Fibroids are thermally ablated with ultrasound.

The device has been approved by the FDA over two and a half years. New centers that use the technology have been recently opening around the U.S., in both St. Louis and Las Vegas.
