Additional Assets Sold by Boston Scientific

Boston Scientific Corporation is selling assets related to one of the company’s radio frequency resection devices, including the technology, patents, and assets related to such. These are being acquired by Bovie Medical Corporation, as detailed in a news release from Bovie. The two organizations previously completed a marketing agreement related to use of the technology in oncology applications by Boston Scientific.

These assets from Boston Scientific are related to utilization of conductive sintered steel as the electrode for delivery of radiofrequency to both cut and coagulate tissue. The system is designed to minimize the amount of blood loss during the procedure, shorten the amount of time required to complete the procedure, and enable hospitals to cut costs.

The technology is used to treat patients with tumors of the kidney, pancreas, and liver. It can additionally be used to support orthopaedic injuries and blood vessels. Patients are treated through open and laparoscopic surgical approaches.

Management from Bovie notes that the purchase expands the number of products available from the company, in addition to enhancing the range of the company’s intellectual property. In addition, the head of tissue resection from Boston Scientific will be joining the team at Bovie as the Vice President of Advanced Resection Technologies.
