Cementless Knee Base Introduced
A new component for artificial knees was launched by Wright Medical Group, Incorporated. The company’s new cementless knee base is designed for use with the company’s Advance Knee System. The news release is posted on the Wright Medical Group’s website.
The system, the Biofoam Cancellous Titanium Tobial Base, is manufactured from bone-like titanium. Incorporated is a roughened texture that is capable of gripping bone so that cement is not required to effectively fix the implant. Another feature of the device is a trabecular structure designed to mimic bone, which also contributes to in-growth of the bone.
Fixation without use of cement is the new trend among knee replacements secondary to both a younger population and an increasingly overweight patient population that is undergoing these procedures. Research suggests that implants that do not require cement have a longer lifespan than those that do require such.
Without use of cement, manufacturers are required to develop an alternative approach to ensure rigid and immediate fixation of the implant. This is achieved in the design features of the Biofoam as described above.
