New Tool for Disk Herniation
HydroCision is launching a new product (pdf) for surgeons intended to minimize intraoperative complications. The MicroResector MD uses a fluid jet to decompress disk herniations quickly and minimize potential complications.
The procedure is less aggressive than open surgery, but a step beyond conservative treatment options. The product is intended to reduce the number of patients who procure a limited, short-term benefit from microdiskectomies secondary to successive disk injury. As well, this approach minimizes side effects which frequently accompany microdiskectomy including tingling, numbness, and pain.
Treatment for disk injuries is a source of some controversy within the medical community, provider philosophy can be a function of specialty training. Nevertheless, many physicians agree that minimally invasive procedures that do not significantly modify anatomic structures are ideal as a result of a high rate of future problems from reinjury and procedures which are simply unsuccessful.
