Osteoconductive Suture Anchor Introduced
The new DoublePlay implant, a unique suture anchor device, was launched by ArthroCare Corporation. The system fixes bone to soft tissue during surgical procedures, such as rotator cuff repair. The device is indicated for use in procedures requiring bone fixation including the foot, knee, wrist, pelvis, shoulder, ankle, hand, and elbow.
Some of the unique features of the DoublePlay include its materials and design. The tool is a fully threaded anchor and incorporates an “eyeglass” design. The eyeglass is a new concept in the design of screw-in anchors. The device is also prepared with Magnum wires for suturing.
Benefits of this design include eliminating the risk of breaking the eyelet. This is the most common cause of failure among standard absorbable anchors.
The material from which the DoublePlay is manufactured is a proprietary composite. It is the first composite used in the manufacture of a device indicated for sports medicine that can both replace bone and is osteoconductive. Data already collected indicates that the material has a ten year pedigree when used for ACL procedures.
The materials used for this design indicate a change in the preference of surgeons who utilize anchoring materials for orthopaedic indications. Absorbable sutures are being utilized less frequently, in favor of anchors that are comprised of biocomposites. Such are more likely to be replaced by bone over time.
ArthroCare develops and produces tools used for minimally invasive surgeries. Many of the devices available incorporate the company’s Coblation technology. This utilizes low-temperature radiofrequency energy to dissolve tissue. This minimizes potential damage to the surrounding tissue, in part by eliminating the use of burning approaches to destroy tissue.
