Cone Beam CT Scanner Cleared for Market
The NewTom Cone Beam Computed Tomography Scanner received clearance from the FDA. The imaging system for dental applications is designed by the AFP Imaging Corporation and manufactured by Quantitative Radiology, a wholly owned subsidiary of AFP. The small profile unit supports placement even with limited space available. The approval was noted by MSN Money.
The NewTom is a dedicated x-ray imaging system which obtains studies with a 360 degree, x-ray rotational sequence. Images are then reconstructed digitally; which provides improved visualization of the dento-maxillo-facial complex, in addition to the entire field for maxillofacial surgery. The system can reconstruct any anatomic images obtained during scanning.
Reconstructed images are displayed in a three-dimensional format and can be examined from any angle. Three dimensional imaging continues to gain favor within the dental community and is considered by some to be the gold standard.
The system completes three-dimensional radiographic views of the jaws and teeth. The system is intended for diagnostic purposes, as well as treatment planning for patients that are undergoing orthodontic procedures, oral or head and neck surgeries, or receiving dental implants.
Flexible seating was also integrated into the system to optimize patient comfort during scanning. Patients can either stand or sit during the imaging study. It also supports patients in wheelchairs, who can remain in such during scanning. This system uses the existing AFP software that allows for both horizontal and vertical configurations.
