Laser Fiber Introduced by OmniGuide
The LightPath fiber was introduced by OmniGuide, Incorporated late last week and is available in both Europe and the United States. This launch was detailed in a press release issued by the company published on the PR Newswire.
The LightPath was designed for use during minimally invasive surgical approaches and features a fine spot size down to 200 microns. The device uses “photonic bandgap” technology developed by OmniGuide, which is used in all their fiber products. In this product, the energy density level and spot size are comparable to “line-of-sight” CO2 laser tools that are often employed. Application in this manner parlays the benefits of CO2, particularly with respect to patient safety.
This new device supports surgeon visualization during procedures requiring precise maneuvers, such as employed with Head and Neck Surgery, Skull Base Surgery, Laryngology, and Neurotology. More precise cuts can be created in a non-invasive manner; this reduces the likelihood that healthy tissue is damaged during procedures.
CO2 applications are limited in their use during procedures which require direct line of sight because of the lack of a fiber delivery system. The LightPath fiber from OmniGuide overcomes these limitations. These approaches can now be expanded to include gynecology, gastroenterology, and pulmonary procedures in addition to the other aforementioned specialties.
