Sleep Apnea Device Testing Commences

The first U.S. trial to evaluate Aspire Medical, Inc.’s device to control sleep apnea, the Advance System, commenced with device implantation in the first study subject on May 23rd.

The Advance System entails device placement in the tongue, a minimally invasive procedure. The device is then adjusted according to a unique patient’s requirements to maintain the airway during sleep. The device is easy to adjust and can be moderated as needed until optimal settings are determined.

The current standard approach to treat sleep apnea fails in approximately 50 percent of patients, so alternative therapies are of great interest. Sleep apnea is associated with daytime drowsiness and can be a significant cardiovascular risk factor.
