Increase in Plastic Surgery in 2006
According to data released on March 22nd by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), almost 11 million procedures for cosmetic plastic surgery were performed in 2006. This figure represents a seven percent increase from the previous year. Over 5.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed last year.
The top five surgical pocedures were: breast augmentation, nose reshaping, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and tummy tuck. The top five minimally invasive procedures were: Botox, chemical peel, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, and hyaluronic acid fillers.
Reconstructive surgery to modify abnormal structures by improving appearance and structures decreased three percent in 2006. The ASPS President suggests that the decline is associated with problems obtaining coverage from health insurers. The top five reconstructive procedures in 2006 included: tumor removal, laceration repair, scar revision, hand surgery, and breast reduction.
