CSF Drain Introduced

The new LimiTorr Volume Limiting CSF Drainage System was introduced by Integra Life Sciences. The product supports draining of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and was detailed in a press release issued by the company.

The system is designed to be used during drainage procedures for both the ventricular and lumbar drains. The design includes a volume-limiting valve mechanism, this supports stopping the drain when a pre-determined volume has been procured. The drain limit can be set between 20 and 30mL.

The safety feature reduces the opportunity to overdrain the CSF. This reduces stress for healthcare workers while completing the procedure. Attention can be directed to completion of the procedure and negates the need to constantly monitor the volume of drained CSF. Overdraining the CSF can result in brainstem herniation, subdural hematomas, or death.

This procedure is commonly used to manage the intracranial pressure of patients. It is most often indicated in patients who are undergoing surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm or those who are neurocompromised.

This is the newest product available in the Integra line of products for cerebrospinal fluid drainage. The system is on display at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting.
