Screening Tool for Memory Loss Validated

A new computer-based screening tool has been identified as an appropriate tool to identify individuals suffering from memory loss, regardless of the cause of the impairment. Researchers recently compared the memory assessment to two other tests, both widely used. Study findings were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Assessment of the new tool, the MCI Screen, was integrated in a study of aging involving 254 patients in Maine. The tool was tested against two paper-based assessment tools, the Clock Drawing Test and Mini-Mental Status Exam. Both are frequently used to screen persons over 65 who have not yet been diagnosed with a condition affecting memory.

The MCI had a 96 percent rate of accuracy in identifying patients with memory impairments. The tool was able to detect such problems stemming from a variety of medical conditions.

This study provides clinicians with an easy to use tool for the assessment of memory problems. Early identification will significantly benefit patients by offering them the opportunity to commence treatment at an earlier stage of disease, which may then be more amenable to treatment.
