Alternative Breast Imaging Techniques Described
Mammography is the most widely used method for breast cancer screening; use of such is encouraged through guidelines implemented by the American Cancer Society, among others. There are, however, some women for whom mammography has limited utility as a screening modality.
Imaging Diagnostic Systems, Inc. published results describing the diagnostic capabilities of CT laser breast imaging as an adjunct to mammography, particularly useful for women who have dense breast tissue. Early data obtained from a study that included over 500 patients was shared. Findings indicate superior sensitivity and specificity compared to mammography alone in patients with both malignant and pre-malignant DCIS.
One distinct benefit of the technology is a decreased rate of biopsies that are not necessary. This is a current downside associated with mammography for women with dense breast tissue, who must undergo testing secondary to suspicious mammography findings. The development of tools and technologies that decrease the incidence of false-positives reduces healthcare costs and emotional upheaval for patients and their loved ones.
