CAD Software Improves Visualization of Breast MRI

A study published in the July issue of the journal Radiology highlights the value of computer-aided enhancement for radiologists reviewing breast MRI studies where contrast was employed.

The most significant benefit noted from using the software tool is the reduction of false positives, which when mislabeled lead to further testing such as breast biopsy.

The team compared findings obtained with and without computer enhancement. An almost one-quarter reduction in the percent of false positives occurred when using the software’s optimal level of enhancement. For the study, the Seattle-based radiology team used Confirma, Inc.’s CADstream 3.0 software.

While the software performed well and reduced eliminated false positives, three false negatives were noted in the cohort of 125 female patients. The authors caution that the tool should be used an adjunct to support evaluation and decision-making by radiologists. It is not appropriate to replace the knowledge base and experience of a seasoned radiologist.
