High Definition PET-CT Unveiled by Siemens

Siemens is showcasing their integration of high definition (HD) technology for molecular imaging studies with the introduction of HD positron emission tomography (PET), the Biograph TruePoint Line of hybrid PET CT tools. The launch was described in a press release issued by the company.

The integration of HD technology provides superior image clarity and definition throughout the entire area captured with imaging. This increases the ability of radiologists to more easily identify areas of concern, particularly smaller regions which may otherwise be difficult to detect.

The system also includes proprietary technology developed by Siemens to increase the image’s contrast, uniformity, and resolution. The combination optimizes each of these image components to create a superior image.

One effect, in particular, that is ameliorated by the introduction of high definition is image degradation secondary to scanner distance. HD PET eliminates this problem, enabling improved visualization of peripheral areas under examiniation The technology provides clear imaging, with 2mm resolution, that is retained across the image. Other improvements noted with the addition of HD include a twofold increase in signal to noise; creating a more sharply defined study.

Applications include cancer disease staging, improved accuracy in planning for radiation treatment, and the possibility of detecting recurrence of malignancy (such as hand and neck cancers) at an earlier stage of disease. All of these benefits can improve outcomes.
