Radiation Oncology Assures Directed Treatment

Researchers from the University of Michigan are investigating the utility of a tool which ensures that patients undergoing radiation therapy treatment for prostate cancer receive targeted radiation to the designated location, as reported by eMax Health.

The Calypso 4D Localization System, designed and manufactured by Calypso Medical, notes any changes in the prostate’s location during treatment with external beam radiation. Monitoring entails implantation of three very small electromagnetic sensors, Beacon Electromagnetic Transponders, directly into the prostate gland near the site of malignancy.

The combination of the Calypso system and the Transponders sends electromagnetic signals if the prostate moves during treatment, the system is able of detecting movements less than millimeters. Also included is location information to guide the delivery of radiation. Radiation therapists can pause treatment if the target moves and restart after repositioning.

Location information is displayed with graphs. Before beginning therapy, parameters are determined to predefine acceptable permutations of radiation delivery to the prostate. The combined Calypso and Beacon resources notify radiation therapists if the gland moves outside of these pre-defined ranges of acceptable.

The tools provide for objective management of radiation therapy in real-time during treatment. This additionally fosters efficient use of resources in the Radiation Oncology Department, as studies have shown that up to 30 percent of treatment time is spent positioning and re-positioning patients.

The University of Michigan team is using the Calypso system as part of a research study, the group participated in initial studies to evaluate the tool. The only indication, at present, is for prostate cancer treatment. Michigan researchers are considering investigation for other possible tumor types.
