Technology for Extravasation Launched
A tool to detect extravasation was launched by MEDRAD, Incorporated as described in a press release from the company. The product was showcased the week of July 9th at the Annual Meeting of the American Healthcare Radiology Administrators.
The MEDRAD XDS Extravasation Detector uses radio frequency wave technology and permittivity to detect the leakage; pooling results when leakage occurs. This prevents continued administration of contrast material so that the clinician can attend to the patient. The approach minimizes the likelihood of false negatives, which can unncessarily impede the completion of studies.
The system is used in conjunction with the Stellant CT Injection System. Leakage of contrast media employed during CT imaging is an increasing concern as newer infusion protocols call for a faster rate of flow during contrast administration.
The device originally received marketing approval from the FDA in March 2007.
