Chronic Dialysis Catheter Market Ready

The newest product available for patients who require chronic dialysis is now available which includes an over-the wire delivery capability. The Hemo-Stream catheter is distributed by Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Incorporated. That organization released a press statement detailing the product approval (pdf) by the FDA.

The Hemo-Stream is designed to provide short-term vascular access so that patients can undergo regular hemodialysis. The product offers the ability to dialyze patients at a higher rate of flow with an incorporated triple lumen design.

Means to implant the device implant are improved, decreasing the amount of time required to complete the procedure of implantation compared to other access products available on the market. This includes simplified means to place the catheter. Other design features offer benefits to patients, including a reduced potential for bleeding.

The Hemo-Stream was designed and manufactured by Rex Medical. Rex signed an agreement which allows Angiotech to both market and distribute this new product.

According to an estimate from Angiotech, over half a million Americans have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD); this is complete and irreversible failure of both kidneys. These patients require regular hemodialysis to stay alive. This activity entails stripping the blood of waste and excess materials, an activity that is usually completed by the kidneys. Blood goes through an automated dialysis machine, removing those materials, and is then returned to the patient. Patients with ESRD have kidneys that no longer function properly and are not capable of completing this life critical activity.
