Hemodialysis Access Catheter Introduced
The Centros, a new hemodialysis access catheter, was recently launched by AngioDynamics. A press release described the new access tool; The company already already secured FDA approval for the device last summer.
The Centros is a self-centering, tunneled hemodialysis access catheter. The distal end of the catheter is designed with a curved end. It is placed in the superior vena cava (SVC). The curved components maintain the positioning of the catheter ports within the SVC. Catheters are placed in the lower third of the SVC rather than the atrium.
Clinical trials completed to assess the device indicate that the Centros fosters uncompromised blood flow over a longer period of time than other dialysis catheters that are currently available on the market. This indicates that placement of the Centros would reduce the number of procedures that patients undergo in order to maintain adequate dialysis access. Preliminary data was presented by the device designer at the International Symposium for Endovascular Therapy earlier this month.
The Centros was originally developed by Ash Access Technology. AngioDynamics acquired worldwide rights to both manufacture and market the device.
