Angioitech Introduces New Suture Line
The FDA granted marketing approval for the new line of absorbable sutures developed by Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Incorporated, according to a press release issued by the company (pdf). The MONODERM sutures are manufactured from polyester and are part of the Quill Self-Retaining System (SRS) product line.
The MONODERM is especially designed for closure of superficial wounds. The polyester used in product manufacture is a rapidly absorbing polymer. The sutures are available in diameters of three different sizes.
The Quill SRS System is developed with a helical barbed design. This unique design allows creation of sutures without requiring the formation of knots. A number of benefits have been noted secondary to the knot-free design, particularly reduced procedure time. This is especially evident in procedures that require large amounts of suturing.
Angiotech also cites other benefits of the product line associated with improved procedural techniques and superior outcomes. The Quill line provides surgeons with superior control of suture tension and enables completion of suturing in anatomically difficult locations. The Quill suture may improve both cosmesis and wound healing.
The organization plans to officially launch the MONODERM line at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting, which will be held this October in Baltimore.
