Catheter for Subcutaneous Implantation Cleared

InterradMedical, Incorporated received marketing clearance from U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the organization’s SecureAcath PICC. The new device is a catheter that incorporates a subcutaneous securing system.

The SecureAcath incorporates a small anchor that is attached to subcutaneous tissue for catheter positioning. The anchor is placed just under the skin to maintain the position of an indwelling catheter. The current method to secure placement entails either suturing or use of adhesives.

Benefits of the new SecureAcath system include assurance that the catheter stays in place and decreased likelihood that patients will develop catheter-related infections. It will also potential reduce the amount of time required to both place and maintain catheters. Another benefit noted in the article describing the approval from FDANews is the elimination of possible injuries resulting from needlesticks during suturing.

According to Interrad Medical, a standalone device is under development. This new iteration will be configured to work with any indwelling catheter including PICC, dialysis, drainage, and CVC catheters.

Minnesota-based Interrad Medical develops a range of different medical devices used in the minimally invasive surgical and interventional procedures. The benefits of the new SecureAcath may increase broad use across healthcare.
