Fibrin Sealant for Liver Surgery Approved
ThermoGenesis Corporation received approval (pdf) from the FDA to market CryoSeal FS System’s autologous fibrin sealant. This product is used during liver resection surgeries as an adjunct to hemostasis.
The system entails two components: an automated device and a companion sterile blood processing disposable system. The tool uses blood plasma to derive fibrin sealants, the process is completed over one hour.
The sealant is specifically created from two proteins that include healing factors from fibrinogen, fibronectin, von Willebrands factor, Factor VIII and Factor XIII. The other protein is from thrombin, which is the activating enzyme.
When the proteins are combined directly to an actively bleeding wound, an adhesive gel forms. The gel bonds with surrounding tissue and helps to halt the bleeding process.
ThermoGenesis develops and manufactures disposable products for regenerative medicine applications that use protein gels and stem cells. The company also develops automated systems to process blood.
